Shelving is one of the easiest ways to transform a blank wall space - lets face it is there anything nicer than a beautifully styled shelfie?! However when you're faced with an empty shelf it can be a bit overwhelming to know where to start, so I thought I'd share my top tips for styling a shelf - featuring my beautiful new oak shelf from Idyll Home, which is currently sitting pride of place in my kitchen. The quality of this shelf is gorgeous, I've gone for the larger size and it's totally transformed this usually bland and uninspiring space. I would definitely recommend having a look at their bits here - they've got some gorgeous homewares!
My top tips for styling a shelf
Think about the material of the shelf itselfUsing different types of material can add extra interest to your display, for example I think wood works really well styled in a rustic themed kitchen, whereas I've gone for a white picture shelf style in the nuresry.
Grouping items together
Arranging objects in odd numbers can make a display more visually appealing than using even numbers. Layering items infront of each other is an easy way to create additional interest, and vary the heights of items to fill wall space.
Colour
I like to keep all items to two or three colours, to tie everything together and give a consistent look. In my lounge I've gone with white, black and grey, to reflect the theme in the rest of the room. Alternatively, you could choose a theme, for example my new kitchen shelf is now home to my Emma Bridgewater collection.
Use the space below the shelf
I like to also use shelves to hang items off as I think this fills the often blank space between shelves, especially if you've got more than one. Things such as letter garlands, bunting and pom-poms are an easy way to do this.
What are your top tips for styling a shelf? I'd love to see some of your shelfies too!
