What to do if you're not in your 'forever home' just yet

styling and decorating a home without investing lots of money, particularly good for those not living in their forever home, renting a house or living in a flat.

I believe anywhere can be a home if you fill it with things you love. Just because you're renting, are on a tight budget, or not in your 'forever home' just yet, doesn't mean you can't live in beautiful surroundings! However, if I'm totally honest this is something I've been struggling with for a while. For us, it just doesn't make sense to rip out the kitchen, or fit that roll-top bath I've been dreaming of, as I know we won't be in this house for too much longer. So I thought I'd share my tips on how I've tried to create a beautiful home without investing unnecessarily.

Quick fixes are a big one for me. I know exactly what kitchen I'd have if I could, I've picked out the tiles, know what shade of paint would be on the cupboards, and which light fitting I'd have above the breakfast bar. However, spending thousands on creating this look in a house that we've already nearly outgrown isn't a smart idea - but there are ways in which you can make cheap quick-fixes. Because nobody should have to live with peach kitchen tiles forever.

Get the paintbrushes out

I truly believe a lick of paint can cure all, so why not paint those kitchen cupboards you can't stand the sight of - you wouldn't believe the difference it can make. I've been considering painting our tiles for a long time, and think I'm going to go for it in the new year.

Slapping a bit of white on your walls will instantly freshen up a room and can even make it appear larger. However if you want to keep up with the latest trend and totally transform the feel of your home, why not go for a dark feature wall? I've been admiring so many beautiful navy homes recently, and have been considering going to the dark side when I give our downstairs loo a much needed revamp this year.

Accessories

So I don’t have gorgeous built in alcoves in my lounge, but that doesn’t mean I can’t have pretty shelves (all budget Ikea buys I should add!) styled with all the things I’d put on there if I did. Adding your own touch through beautiful decor can make a house a home, I think. Plus, you can always take those pretty bits with you to your next place!

Seating in small spaces

No space for that dream kitchen island, or even a table? How about a breakfast bar against a wall? We'd have a lot of 'lost' space in our kitchen without ours, so this is a real lifesaver for us.

Vintage features

Can’t afford to replace all your radiators with beautiful vintage ones? How about covering those eyesores with a simple radiator cover. I bang on about mine all the time, but I really feel that it’s totally transformed our hallway, and have my eye on a couple more for other rooms too.

Bathrooms

One thing I’d absolutely love is a beautiful big roll top bath, however whilst this isn’t going to be worth it in this house, it doesn’t mean I have to live with our dated bath as it currently is. At the moment I cover it as much as I can with pretty towels/bath mats, however I’ve had my eye on a beautiful wooden bath panel for a while and hope to replace the current one in the new year, which will hopefully update this room enough for now.

Are you in a similar situation with your current home? What are your tips for quick-fixes that don’t break the bank?
